Sophie, you have a very good question on the hypoallergenic quality: how can it be passed to the straights so often and strongly? We simply do not know at this point, don’t have the genetic genes or epigenetics or whatever is causing it pinned down. At this point we do not even have a good theory on how it is inherited. There have been many leaps in discovery in genetics in recent years like: 1) A particular gene can make several different proteins, 2) RNA helps genes in making these different proteins, 3) epigenetics: there are methyl molecules that are tied to the sides of the DNA strands that turn on or turn off various genes and are about a 1000 times more likely to change than genes, a stressful environment will cause them to change immediately, 4) genes normally work as part of a large network of hundreds of genes, that influence each other to determine the amount made of a particular protein, 5) Supposedly “junk genes that supposedly had no functions, are now being found to have functions including influences on aging, 6) when procreating, genes may flip end for end, split up, get truncated, change positions, double up, triple up or more, 8) the exact position of a gene and the closeness of certain neighbors influences the actions of a gene, and 8) there are more minor ones. Since this field is still far from mature and stable, I expect many more discoveries in the next decade. Maybe one of the new discoveries may explain this puzzle of hypoallergenicy transmittal.
